Top seeded Russian Grandmaster Alexandr Predke (Elo rating 2620) was surprisingly held to a draw in the first round of the 11th Chennai Open International Grandmaster Chess tournament 2019 for Sakthi Group Dr.N Mahalingam trophy at Novotel IBIS OMR Hotel, Chennai here today. Indian lad Satish Chandra G matched the Super GM move for move and hung on for a precious half a point after 77 moves. The resultant position – King, Rook, 2pawns vs King, Bishop, 3pawns – offered little for the Russian as he agreed for a draw with 1665 rated Indian. A draw in the top board, where Satish Chandra made light of the 955 ELO difference, shows the strength Indian chess has moved to.
Rest of the seeds had it easy in this annual Chennai event played for total prize money of 15 lakhs. The 10 round Swiss tournament saw 286 entries from 17 countries including 20 Grandmasters and 65 titled players. The winner takes home the handsome Chennai Open 2019 trophy + cash award of Rs. 300000 (Rupees Three lakhs only).
